Surf and Stand Up Paddle

We look forward to
seeing you at the Hemingway Kanala House.

Surfing has become one of the sports with most followers in the Basque Country thanks to its great conditions and its almost unbeatable surroundings. Waves that are pretty much a guarantee, safe places to surf, and above all, a friendly atmosphere! Ideal for surfing with all the family, even the youngest members. While there are countless places to surf in the region, the best known are:

Mundaka, which has one of the best waves in the world and the longest left in Europe. All surfers who know their stuff just have to catch this wave. The best conditions are to be found from October to March.

Bakio’s different breaks are very well known and can be surfed all year round, hence the large number of surf championships held there. Don’t forget to respect the locals and to wait your turn, there are plenty of waves for everyone!

Laga beach is very pretty, with a great surfing atmosphere; it can be safely surfed all year round. This beach has a couple of schools where children can have classes and take their first steps in the surfing world.

Ogella is a small beach with no lifeguards and a stone reef where it’s easy to read the left or right-hand waves; however, the latter are somewhat faster and form more of a barrel. The ones on the left are a little longer and easier to surf.

The region has plenty more beaches and breaks; the best idea is to talk to the locals who can help you to enjoy a fantastic surfing experience, conditions permitting.
If a squall is expected, meaning a rough sea or XXL conditions, one great alternative is to discover the Urdaibai estuary and stand up paddle. This is a pretty outing usually leaving from the Laida or Arketas beaches when the tide is coming in. If the tide is going out, it’s better to leave from the Arteagas tide mill, arriving at Laida beach.
